It all began with a simple outing in the woods...

The story goes, the Surly boys came out to California for a little sunshine, but it rained and snowed the entire trip. Cabin fever mounted, and a plan was hatched: Grab the nearest Xtracycle, and see how much firewood you can haul.

Everyone struck out into the hills surrounding Xtracycle headquarters. The landscape's bounty of downed tree limbs, dead brush, half buried pallets and scrap wood was gathered, using the Xtracycles to their max.

An every day adventure was born out of boredom and cold feet. No one would believe the quantity of firewood gathered by 4 men on bicycle. The folks at Surly were inspired, and the concept for Big Dummy was the natural follow up.

Playing together is better...

Now, over one year-old, the Big Dummy exceeds expectations and rocks dozens of people's every day adventure like none other. Surly was not the first to adopt the Longtail Standard, but they’ve certainly helped to prove the concept.

When we riff off the same theme, amazing improvisation happens. It’s exactly what the LT Standard is all about. Healthy collaboration and fair competition leading to a richer environment and more products with more uses for more people.
